Porter wins wrestling triple crown
Brant Porter of Waianae won gold medals in all three styles he competed in at the USA Wrestling West Kids and Cadet Regional Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.
Porter placed first in the intermediate (50-pound) division in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman in the tournament, which included athletes from 11 states. He went 15-0 overall (4-0 in folkstyle, 5-0 in freestyle and 6-0 in Greco-Roman) at the regional meet held June 19-25.
Porter, a fourth-grader at Leihoku Elementary, competed with Team Hawaii and trains with the Waianae Wrestling Club.
Christensen, Nishimura earn scholarships
Joshua Christensen of Kahuku High and Kealii Nishimura of Mid-Pacific Institute were awarded $6,000 scholarships from USTA Serves, the national charitable foundation of the United States Tennis Association.
Honorees were selected based on "their commitment to academic success and their local community and their participation in tennis." Christensen and Nishimura were among 55 scholarship winners nationally.
Takatsuka to coach Hawaii Pacific
Reid Takatsuka was promoted to interim head coach for the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team, the school announced yesterday.
Takatsuka was an assistant on coach Jeff Harada’s staff for the past three years, when the Sea Warriors went 50-29. Harada took a job to be an assistant with the Navy women’s team.
Originally from Kaneohe, Takatsuka graduated from Hawaii Baptist Academy, where he lettered in basketball, volleyball and golf. He coached nine seasons, including seven as the head girls coach at HBA. He is also a Cal Baptist graduate.
Bebe regains Transpac lead
Bebe retook the lead in the Transpacific Yacht Race from California to Hawaii on Monday.
Alpha Puppy and Paddy Wagon are also high on the leader board in the race that is approaching the halfway mark.
When the handicap is applied, the leader among the 48 entrants is Waikiki Yacht Club’s Grand Illusion, one of the big 70-footers, with skipper James McDowell.
Pegasus, another boat representing Waikiki Yacht Club and skippered by Philippe Kahn, is in third place on corrected time.
