NABC honors 4 Seasiders
Four members of the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball team were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches for their academic achievement.
Seasiders seniors Heath Gameren and Rory Patterson and juniors Mustapha El-Akkari and Ryo Tanaka were named to the NABC Honors Court. To be eligible, players must be a junior or senior with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
Hawaii duo wins volleyball title
Jake Chouljian and Shea Suzumoto of Honolulu captured the Under-12 boys title at the AAU Beach Volleyball Junior National Championship last weekend in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Chouljian and Suzumoto defeated the team of Honolulu’s Jameson McKibbin and Andrew Bagnard of California 28-23 in the final. Ryan Wilcox and Ethan Siegfried, another Hawaii duo, placed third in the division.
McKibbin, Chouljian, Suzumoto, Wilcox and Siegfried were also members of the Outrigger Red team that won the silver in 12 Club Gold division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championships held June 29-July 6 in Minnesota.
Baravilala on USA Rugby U20 team
Hawaii’s Akalaini "Bui" Baravilala has been named to USA Rugby’s women’s U20 national team that opens play today in the U20 Nations Cup in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Baravilala, a 2009 graduate of Radford High, was an all-league selection in basketball and volleyball.
South Africa, England and Canada are also in the field of the U20 tournament that runs through July 23 at UC Santa Barbara.
Belle Mente nearing Transpac finish
Belle Mente moved ahead of the 47 yachts in the Transpacific Yacht Race from California to Hawaii.
Belle Mente, a 70-foot yacht, is trying to hold off Magnitude 80 for the Barn Door Trophy, awarded to the first to cross the finish line. Belle Mente was 18 miles ahead of Magnitude 80 as of Wednesday.
The first yachts could arrive early Friday morning.
Waikiki Yacht Club’s Grand Illusion remains the handicap leader, 5 miles ahead of Pegasus-Motion X.
Stadium Stars seeking applicants
Aloha Stadium is inviting high school seniors and college students to apply for its Stadium Stars program and Hawaii Sports Program.
