Somewhere in the Tennessee mountains on Wednesday, Jerry Glanville had high hopes.
"I’m driving home (to Georgia) in a 1996 Buick Estate station wagon," Glanville said, "but it has an LT1 Corvette motor in it. It can move. I don’t think it will be a one-way trip."
Glanville is head coach of the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League, a five-team league that is suspending operations for a month while a television deal is sought. Training camp was supposed to open this past weekend.
"I’m disappointed," Glanville said, "but not discouraged. I think we’ll be back in a month."
The Hartford players reported for physical examinations 10 days ago. They waited for a training camp that did not open.
"They sent us home," said safety Jacob Patek, one of four former Hawaii players on the Hartford roster. "They told us to stay in shape."
The players were not allowed to practice during their stay. "We did little jail-house workouts — situps, push-ups in our (hotel) rooms," Patek said.
Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan returned to California on Wednesday. He said the quarterbacks had meetings and learned plays.
Brennan had hoped to use the UFL to showcase his skills. He said the extra month of workouts will be beneficial. He has recovered from multiple injuries suffered in a car accident in November.
"All of us are hoping for the best," Brennan said. "Life is life."
