Ex-UH player a winner at Davis Cup
Former University of Hawaii tennis player Daniel Llarenas helped the Pacific Oceania team to a Davis Cup win earlier this month. Llarenas, a Word of Life graduate who moved from Guam to Hawaii at age 12, became the first player from Guam to play for Pacific Oceania, made up of 18 countries throughout the Pacific.
The combined team defeated Iran, 4-1, to retain its place in Group II for next year. It is ranked 67th.
Llarenas teamed with Cyril Jacobe, from Vanuatu, for the clinching doubles win over Iran’s Ashkan Shokoofi and Seyed Taheri, who hold ITF rankings. Jacobe and Llarenas pulled off the upset, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Llarenas was a three-year letterwinner for the Rainbows (2008-11) after transferring from Hawaii Pacific. Since concluding his UH career last spring, he returned to Guam, where he is tennis director at the Hilton Resort & Spa.
Prep outfielder signs with BYUH softball
High school outfielder Chandra Tewari has signed a national letter of intent with the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team.
Tewari, a slap hitter with good speed, hit .373 with a .642 on-base percentage this past season at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Wash. She made the all-WESCO team.
"Chandra is a real sparkplug who brings so much energy and enthusiam to the game that it spills over to her teammates," Seasiders head coach Scott Lowe said. "She will give fits to opposing defenses and will greatly increase our team speed on the basepaths."
Linsky honored by Jewish Sports Review
Former University of Hawaii reliever Lenny Linsky was named to the Jewish Sports Review Division I Baseball All-America Team.
Linsky, a right-hander, posted a 1.30 ERA with a 1-1 record and a UH single-season record 14 saves last season.
He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round of last month’s MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Final Transpac yacht crosses finish line
Hassle was the final yacht to complete the 2,225-mile Transpacific Yacht Race from San Pedro, Calif., to Honolulu.
Skipper Larry Malmberg and his crew arrived at the Diamond Head buoy Thursday afternoon.
The Transpac Race started July 4 with 47 yachts entered.
