Eggens, Yamashiro earn water polo honors

Hawaii’s Monika Eggens earned a place on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Women’s All-America first team, and three teammates also earned recognition. In the past nine years, 24 Rainbow Wahine have earned All-America honors.

Eggens led the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in scoring as a junior, averaging 2.56 goals. The native of British Columbia was a second-team pick last year. She is taking next school year off to compete for a spot on Canada’s Olympic team.

Senior Leonie Van Der Molen was selected to the third team, earning recognition for the third straight year. Seniors Saara Majuri and Carmen Eggens were both named honorable mention.

The Rainbow Wahine finished 2011 ranked sixth in the nation.

In other water polo news, Kamehameha Schools sophomore Kiana Yamashiro will represent the United States at the UANA Pan American Water Polo Youth Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico, next month.

Yamashiro, a 2-meter defender and attacker, and 12 others from across the country will compete in the cadet division (15-and-younger). The U.S. squad will face water polo teams from North America and South America.

Yamashiro made the team through the Olympic Development Program.

Last season, she was an ILH second-team selection in water polo, and state champion in 200-yard freestyle.

Bowen leads Aloha PGA Senior lead

Elleair Maui Golf Club’s Brad Bowen shot a 5-under-par 67 in Monday’s opening round of the Aloha Section PGA Senior Championship, at Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course.

Bowen is two shots ahead of David Ishii and Wade Nishimoto. Craig Sasada and Lance Taketa are tied for fourth at 72.

The final round begins at 7 a.m. today at Turtle Bay’s Fazio course.

Seasiders softball adds 1

The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team signed incoming freshman Lindsay Robison to a national letter of intent for the upcoming season.

Robison, from Mill Creek, Wash., was a third baseman and pitcher for Henry M. Jackson High School who hit .544 with a .634 on-base percentage and a .908 slugging percentage.

The Seattle Times All-Star and team captain led her team in every offensive category, hitting safely in 26 of 27 games, and slugged 31 extra-base hits, including eight home runs. She compiled a 14-6 record with four saves and a 2.48 earned-run average.
