Kahuku football coach Reggie Torres has been suspended indefinitely following an incident at the school during the program’s camp, several sources close to the program told the Star-Advertiser on Saturday.
Sources confirmed that principal Donna Lindsey suspended Torres and junior varsity head coach Ikaika Plunkett as of Friday after five JV players were caught in possession of an illegal substance.
A call to Lindsey at the school to confirm was not returned.
Sources said Plunkett disciplined the entire JV team after the substance was discovered, ordering players to run for 90 minutes starting at midnight Tuesday morning. That was followed by a short night of sleep, then a scheduled 2.5-mile run as the team resumed normal conditioning training, sources said. A call to Plunkett to confirm the punishment was not returned.
Torres was also made aware of the incident, but neither coach reported it to Lindsey. When parents called the school to complain, Lindsey inquired and learned the facts about it by Thursday.
Last year, the OIA banned the team from participating in the league title game on the eve of the contest due to questions about a player later found to be ineligible.
From that point on, athletic director Joe Whitford was placed on paid leave and the investigation into Whitford was not completed until the past month.
Vice Principal Pat Macadangdang has been handling AD duties, with Whitford demoted to teaching status. Walter Santiago is running the varsity football team in the interim.
A source close to the program says that Torres was told by the administration that "they’re going to try and speed up the process" with Kahuku opening its season at Waianae on Aug. 12.
