Kahookele wins world kayak event

Hawaii’s Shawn Kahookele won the final of the men’s K1 200-meter C while representing USA Canoe/Kayak at the Junior Sprint World Championships on Sunday at Brandenburg, Germany.

Kahookele prevailed with a time of 38.212 seconds, edging Stanislav Dimitrov of Bulgaria (38.325).

Also, Trenton Tam and Alex Cheung of Hawaii Canoe/Kayak placed eighth of nine teams in the men’s K2 200-meter semifinals.

Local track athletes place at USATF meet

Several Hawaii athletes participated in last week’s USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Wichita, Kan., with a few notching top-10 finishes.

Hannah Sherrill of Le Jardin, competing unattached, finished second in the young women’s discus Friday with a toss of 141 feet, 5 inches. She also placed 10th in the shot put Thursday.

Christian Academy junior Michael Chin of Godspeed Track Club placed second in the intermediate boys 800-meter run Saturday with a time of 1:57.57.

Kapolei senior Devin Jenkins, racing unattached, finished seventh in the young men’s 100 meters Sunday. He clocked a 10.59.

Chun wins wrestling gold in Poland

Roosevelt graduate Clarissa Chun won a wrestling gold medal for Team USA in the 105.5-pound women’s freestyle division at the Poland Open in Poznan on Saturday.

Chun defeated Jaqueline Schellin of Germany 1-0, 3-0 in the finals. She will compete at the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, in September.
