47-year-old pedestrian killed on Likelike
A man killed when a van hit him on Likelike Highway late Tuesday has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Tanny Joseph, 47.
Joseph’s death was the 32nd fatality on Oahu roads this year, compared with 36 at this time last year.
Police said a 2011 Honda Odyssey driven by a 37-year-old Kailua woman hit Joseph near the Wilson Street intersection at 11:21 p.m.
Joseph was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died at 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
The van was traveling toward Kaneohe when Joseph darted into the path of the vehicle, police said. He was not in a crosswalk.
Kaneohe-bound lanes of the highway were closed for three hours at Wilson Street while police investigated the crash. Traffic was routed to the next intersection, at Alu Street.
Cooking mishaps blamed in house fires
Fire investigators have determined that cooking fires caused blazes that damaged two homes in Waipahu and Punchbowl Tuesday night.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said overheated oil started a fire on Pilimai Street in Waipahu at 5:51 p.m. Five people were displaced. Damage was estimated at $410,000.
The blaze was reported under control at 6:21 p.m. A man was injured slightly when he was burned by oil. He was treated at the scene but declined to go to the hospital.
Tuesday’s second fire at a three-story home in the Kalawahine subdivision on Kapahu Street was attributed to a pot that was left unattended while heating on a stove, Seelig added.
The home is owned by former fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo, now retired, who was not home at the time. His two sons and another person live in the house, which sustained $350,000 in damage.
