Chan denied at Junior PGA Championship
Lorens Chan nearly earned Hawaii’s second Junior PGA Championship in as many years, but Cody Proveaux sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole Friday to win the boys title by a shot.
Chan, who also birdied the final hole, fired a final-round 69 at Fort Wayne, Ind., and finished alone in second at 283. The ‘Iolani senior was 5 under on the back nine. Chan has verbally committed to UCLA next fall.
Proveaux, a senior from South Carolina, shot 73. He is heading to Clemson.
Ariya Jutanugarn, a 15-year-old from Thailand, took a 10-stroke lead into the final day of the girls’ competition and held it with a final-round 70. She finished at 273.
Defending champion Cassy Isagawa (77—299), a Baldwin graduate headed to Oregon, was 13th. State high school champion Eimi Koga (73), a Moanalua junior, and Punahou eighth-grader Allisen Corpuz (77) tied for 15th at 301.
Golf Channel will present a 1-hour highlight show of the 36th Junior PGA Championship on Sept. 8.
Chaminade reels in pair of recruits
Prep standouts from Australia and Colorado have committed to play for the Chaminade men’s basketball team next season.
Ethan Gameren, a 6-foot-4 guard, won state titles at Brisbane High School in Australia in his junior and senior seasons.
Gameren also recently excelled for Australia’s Western Magic, averaging 15 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds.
"Ethan is an explosive, very fast guard from Australia that is very versatile on the court," said Silverswords head coach Eric Bovaird.
Darko Vukasovic, who is 6-6, played for Yuma High School in Colorado. He was a first-team all-state selection after averaging 17 points and 9 rebounds last season.
"Darko was a great pick-up late in the recruiting season," Bovaird said. "He is very versatile at 6-6. He has the ability to play on the perimeter, shoot the 3, handle the ball and is solid inside. Darko should fit very well into the unique style of basketball we plan to play."
