Hawaii actors are being invited to a pair of open casting calls for "The River," the new supernatural TV drama from ABC that’s about to start shooting episodes in the islands.
Although no specific roles have been identified, actors and background extras are being sought, said Brent Anbe, who is handling local casting for the show.
The first open casting call will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Kahuku Ballroom at the Turtle Bay Resort. The second casting call will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Aloha Room at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Because "The River" is set in a remote Amazon jungle, ABC is looking for actors to accurately portray slender, fit, rural South American natives of all ages, Anbe said. Large, visible tattoos are discouraged.
No experience is necessary.
"I think we have a lot of talent here, and we have such diverse looks they can double for South American looks," Anbe said. "I have the full trust in Hawaii’s people to pull this off with authenticity."
A photo will be taken of each applicant, and Anbe will compile a list of potential actors for the series. Résumés and professional publicity photographs are not required, but will be accepted, he said.
Anbe will be a familiar face for local actors. Last year he helped cast locally for "Off the Map," the failed ABC series that also shot in the islands, as well as an episode of the network’s "Cougar Town."
A writer and director, Anbe spent five years working for the state film office.
"The River" is the story of a wildlife expert/TV personality who disappears while looking for magic deep in uncharted areas of the Amazon. To finance a rescue mission, his family must agree to the presence of a documentary film crew.
Michael Green of "Heroes" and "Kings," and Oren Peli, creator of "Paranormal Activity," are the executive producers.
A series premiere date has not been set, but episodes will begin shooting in about two weeks.
