The man killed Monday in a crash on Kalanianaole Highway was the sixth motorcyclist to die on Oahu’s roads so far this year.
There were also six motorcycle fatalities for the year as of Aug. 8, 2010, while there were 11 through Aug. 8, 2009, police said.
The latest victim was identified by city medical examiners as Richard Grover, 54, of Honolulu.
Police said Grover’s Honda was traveling west on Kalanianaole near Kalani High School at about 10:45 a.m. when he struck the rear end of a car stopped at the Laukahi Street intersection.
Police said the car, driven by a 38-year-old woman, was legally stopped at the light.
Grover, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered serious head injuries, police said. He died later at the Queen’s Medical Center.
The death brought the number of traffic fatalities on Oahu to 33 this year, compared with 37 for the same period last year.
Of the 33, 21 were in crashes that did not involve just motor vehicles, police said. In other words, 21 of the crashes involved pedestrians, motorcycles, mo-peds or other nonvehicles.
