The United Football League’s Hartford Colonials folded Wednesday, leaving four former Hawaii football players seeking jobs.

The search could end as early as Monday, when the four remaining UFL teams conduct an allocation draft of the Hartford roster.

“I would like another opportunity to play in the UFL,” quarterback Colt Brennan said.

During his two-year tenure in the National Football League, Brennan underwent surgeries on both hips and both knees. Last November, he suffered multiple injuries in a two-car accident on the Big Island. He said he is finally healthy for the first time in more three years, “which is why the UFL would have been helpful.”

Former UH safety Jacob Patek, slotback Ryan Grice-Mullen and offensive lineman Brysen “Bula” Ginlack also were on the Colonials’ roster. Former UH defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville, who was Hartford’s head coach, has been reassigned to a consultant’s job with the UFL.

The UFL was supposed to open training camps last month, but instead went on a 30-day hiatus to secure a television contract.

Correa fights fatigue

Every defensive lineman’s goal is a sack. Wednesday, Haku Correa could only think of hitting the sack.

“I’m super tired,” said Correa, who witnessed the birth of his daughter Wednesday morning, then participated in two football practices.

At 6 a.m. Tuesday, fiancee Mahea Cabbab called Correa, who was staying in the UH dance studios as part of the Warriors’ training camp. Cabbab said she was heading to the hospital. Correa met her there.

Early Wednesday, Cabbab was told a C-section would be needed. “I loved seeing my daughter come out, seeing her face,” Correa said.

Zaydah Lindsey Correa weighed 9 pounds, 14 ounces.

“The world is way better,” Correa said. “My love for her is unconditional. I can’t describe what I feel for her.”

He also said he has greater appreciation for his mother.

“She had five boys,” Correa said.

Masch gains acceptance

When defensive lineman Zach Masch joined the Warriors in August 2009, it was not like at first sight.

“He wasn’t accepted,” defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga said. “He missed workouts. He didn’t show up for things.”

But then, Meatoga said, Masch “did a 180. He went from everybody’s dump list to the top of the (favorite’s) list.”

Now, Meatoga said, Masch is “one of the boys. We call him the ‘coolest haole guy’ on the team.”

Masch is a regular at the defensive linemen’s camping trips. He even joined teammates in jumping off Laie Point.

“He’s one of those guys who goes hard every snap,” Meatoga said. “He works hard.”

Masch had the best bench press among defensive players in recent testing, lifting 465 pounds.

“I love getting stronger,” Masch said. “If I’m sore, I’m going to work that muscle out. I’m not going to spend my free time on the beach. I’m going to work in the weight room. I want to get that WAC championship. I want to go undefeated this season.”

UH head coach Greg McMackin decided Masch needed an expanded role. He will be used as a defensive end in certain schemes; the rest of the time, he will be in the defensive-tackle rotation.

“He’s physical,” McMackin said. “He’s 295. As an end, he’s across the tight end. That’s a big force to deal with. We like him a lot. He has a great attitude. He’s very competitive.”
