FIVE-0 VIP PARTY | 1. Dana Higa and her husband, Kevin Higa, third from left, were guests at the invite-only reception for the newly opened Five-0 Bar & Lounge Aug. 6 at the Royal Hawaiian Center. Kevin said he'd known Five-0 owner Ted Davenport, left, since their days in elementary school in Hawaii Kai. Davenport's business partner, Alfred B. Souza III, described his own role in the company as "vice president and head busboy." He added that happy hour is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and parking is validated.

5. Karaoke contest emcee Keith Haugen, left, talked with pop category winners Natalia Blomgren and Joey Kaalekahi. Blomgren's rendition of "Don't Rain on My Parade" was a show stopper. Ditto Kaalekahi's expressive take on "Feeling Good." All four finalists will compete in the national finals in Laughlin, Nev., in mid-September.

FOUR WIN KARAOKE FINALS | 4. Hawaii karaoke king Walter Omori, center, congratulated Wally Vincent and Sharon Lennon after they took top honors in the 50 Years+ category at the state finals of the Talent Quest National Karaoke Contest Aug. 7 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. Vincent performed with the poise of a veteran lounge entertainer, while Lennon got deeply into the searing emotional themes of "Forgive" and "Cry Me a River."

MOETLEY ROCKS "THE ROCK" | 2. Honolulu Star-Advertiser staffer Jeff Clark (aka Moetley Ueke) got some love from Jen Maronek, left, and Kelly Ashburn after his late-evening solo show Aug. 5 at the Waikiki Hard Rock Cafe. Hard-rock melodies aren't standard fare for ukulele, but Clark's set displayed the possibilities.

"FOCUS" ON C&K | 3. ProjectFocus Hawai'i President Lisa Uesugi welcomed Cecilio Rodriguez, left, and Henry Kapono Ka'aihue to the private VIP opening reception for "Shine: Inspiring Joy Through Their Eyes," an exhibit of photographs of and by youth with Down syndrome, Aug. 6 at Davies Pacific Center. The reception was the biggest to date for a ProjectFocus exhibition, and C&K capped it with an intimate 30-minute concert they opened with "Friends" and wrapped with "Goodtimes Together." The photo exhibit continues through Aug. 19.
