Crews bring Haleiwa fire under control
A stubborn brush fire in Haleiwa on Monday afternoon burned about 10 acres, including part of a noni tree farm, before it was brought under control by firefighters at about 4:40 p.m.
Five engine companies and two tanker companies responded to the fire near Haleiwa and Paalaa roads just outside Haleiwa town, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
Haleiwa Road was shut down for a time but was reopened shortly before 5 p.m. Paalaa Road, between Haleiwa Road and Aukai Lane, remained closed for cleanup, according to Seelig and police dispatch.
Examiner identifies drowning victim
A woman who died of an apparent drowning Friday in Kahala was identified as Jiwon Choi, 45.
The city Medical Examiner’s Department said Monday that Choi was the victim of an accidental drowning. Police said a family member found the woman unresponsive in her swimming pool at about 5 p.m. Friday, and efforts to revive her failed. She was taken by ambulance in critical condition to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Teen arrested in beating death of man
Police arrested a 17-year-old boy Monday in connection with the beating death of a man at a Liliha Street bus stop.
Witnesses identified the teen, and he was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree murder. He was released pending investigation.
John Abiley Jr., 64, died Thursday after being assaulted at a bus stop near the School Street intersection at about 6:40 p.m. Aug. 5.
The city Department of the Medical Examiner said Abiley’s death was a homicide and that he died of blunt force injuries to his head. Police said Abiley was sitting at the bus stop when a male approached him and punched and kicked his face and body several times.

Man surrenders to Big Isle police
A man wanted last week for questioning in an attempted-murder case turned himself in to Hawaii County police.
Police said Monday that Maurice Hackett, 34, turned himself in Friday and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He was released pending investigation.
Last week, police asked for the public’s help in finding Hackett, who was described as "armed and dangerous."
Police said Hackett, who has no permanent address but frequents the Waa Waa area, was wanted in connection with a shooting in Puna Thursday night that injured a 26-year-old man.
The victim, who also has no permanent address, was taken to the Pahoa fire station late Thursday night with a gunshot to his lower body and a grazing wound to his head. He was transferred to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
