Dugas wins assistant championship
Eric Dugas continued his hot streak, winning the Aloha PGA-Callaway Golf Assistant Championship on Monday at Kapolei Golf Course. Dugas also won the Kona Open and Aloha Section PGA Professional Championship over the past seven weeks.
The assistant pro at Kukio Golf & Beach Club on the Big Island was the only golfer to break par at Kapolei, played at 6,566 yards. He opened with a 4-under-par 68 Sunday and followed that with a 73 in the final round, playing the back nine in 2 under.
His total of 3-under 141 was four shots better than Princeville’s Tom Freestone (72) and Pearl Country Club’s Shawn McCauley (73). Oahu Country Club’s Shane Abe (74), Hilo Muni’s Kevin Hayashi (75) and Ko Olina’s Kevin Shimomura (78) tied for fourth at 148. Shimomura was the defending champion.
Dugas’ sectional championship was worth $1,250. He also qualified for the National Assistant Championship in November at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Freestone, Abe and Shimomura are alternates.
4 tennis players earn ITA honors
Hawaii’s Leo Rosenberg, Chris Meyer, Jeremy Tweedt and Dmytro Kovalyov were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athletes. Honorees must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 and been enrolled at their present school at least two semesters.
Tweedt, Meyer and Rosenberg were all honored for the first time. It was the second honor for Kovalyov, a junior from Ukraine.
Rosenberg, an All-WAC second-team selection in singles, was named to the All-WAC academic team, along with Kovalyov and Tweedt.
Lawson, Shoji and U.S. team lose to Czechs
After sweeping Mexico and Turkey, Team USA — with five Hawaii players — fell in five to the Czech Republic on Monday at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. The scores were 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 15-13.
Honolulu’s Brad Lawson had 18 points (14 kills, two blocks, two aces) for the U.S. and team captain Kawika Shoji contributed 37 assists, four kills and five blocks. Brother ErikShoji had five digs. Tri Bourne and Riley McKibbin were substitutes.
The U.S. (2-1) concludes pool play today against the United Arab Emirates (0-2). The Czech Republic (3-0) plays Thailand (0-2).
