For the first time in this football training camp, Hawaii’s four No. 1 receivers practiced together Monday.
"We still didn’t get enough reps," quarterback Bryant Moniz said. "This was a step."
In the first nine days of practice, left slotback Billy Ray Stutzmann (tight hamstring) practiced twice and left wideout Darius Bright (sprained right big toe) once. Right slotback Miah Ostrowski did not participate in passing drills until Monday, when he was joined by Stutzmann and Bright.
Right wideout Royce Pollard, who has a tender left knee, missed only one practice, and that was to attend a summer class. Pollard was the only No. 1 receiver to participate in Monday’s 11-on-11 drills.
"They’re getting closer to being ready," offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich said.
Bright suffered his turf toe during a charity event last month. He was scheduled to return last Wednesday, but instead practiced two days earlier. That early workout "damaged (the toe) more," Bright said. "I should have waited. I’m going to be smart about it this time, like I should have been last time. You learn from your mistakes."
Bright, Stutzmann and Ostrowski did not appear to have any difficulty going through their routes.
"The main thing was not to make it worse," Ostrowski said. "I’m going to keep going out there to get more confidence in my leg."
Moniz said: "They’re getting the looks, but they’re only going half-speed right now. We really want them to be 100 percent so we can practice at full speed. We don’t want to rush them and have them get hurt. We’ve got time. We want to get them ready for the first game."
Rolovich said the injuries have provided more reps for the first-year Warriors — wideouts Cecil Doe and Trevor Davis, and slotbacks Chris Gant and Breydan Torres-Keohokapu.
Bright said the starters should be ready for the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado.
"There’s no doubt at all," Bright said. "I wouldn’t miss that for my life. I’ll be out there."
