Duke race opens long-distance season
Sunday’s 44th Duke Kahanamoku Race kicks off the long-distance outrigger paddling season on Oahu.
The 7-mile short-course race from Kailua Beach around Mokolea and back begins at Kailua Beach at 7:30 a.m.
The 24-mile men’s race from Kailua Beach to Duke Kahanamoku starts 30 minutes after the the short-course is finished.

Ho‘okahi wins Pateadores Cup
Ho‘okahi Soccer Club won the Pateadores Cup in the under-16 girls division, defeating LA Premiere of Los Angeles 2-0 in Irvine, Calif.
Alicia Bell-Reid (Moanalua) and Ellis Akana (Punahou) scored for Ho‘okahi in the final. Goalie Domenique Banta (Moanalua) stopped six shots.
The Hawaii team went 2-1 in pool play, the one loss coming to LA Premier 1-0. Ho‘okahi gave up two goals while scoring nine over three days.
Other team members from Hawaii were Kristina Brown (Seabury Hall); Jazlin Ching (Aiea), Jamie Hearn (Aiea), Tiana Lucas (Maui), Jessica Misajon (Lelehua), Noel Ohashi (Pearl City), Shayna Olanda (Aiea), Sarah Pascual (Punahou) and Abby Tayor (Aiea). Taylor led the team with three goals and three assists.
The coach was Kalani and Drucilla Taylor.
Hawaii represented at USTA championships
Ten teams will represent Hawaii at the USTA Adult League national championships this fall. Eight claimed Hawaii Pacific Section Championships at the Patsy T. Mink CORP Tennis Complex. Team Hickam (2.5 men) and Sets on the Beach (3.0 men) advanced without competing at the sectional.
The winning women’s teams two weeks ago were; 2.5—Sets in the City (Oahu); 3.0—The Young and the Rest of Us (Maui); 3.5—Penn Pals (Oahu); 4.0—@ The Courts (Oahu), and; 4.5—No Worries (Oahu).
Winning men’s teams were: 3.5—Kalakaua (Oahu); 4.0—96797 Team 4.0 (Oahu), and; 4.5—KRC Hit the Ball Hadda (Oahu).
National championships start the end of September and run through October. They will be played in the Palm Springs, Calif., area and Tucson, Ariz.
