The U.S. Department of Labor is suing a Waikiki hostel and its operator for underpaying guests who were allowed to work for their room and board.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court Tuesday, names as defendants D.B. Hawaii Inc., which does business as Polynesian Hostel at 2584 Lemon Road, and Khoa Dang Reiter.
Reiter is the company’s president, secretary, treasurer and director, according to state business registration records.
Since Sept. 4, 2008, the hostel and Reiter paid worker/guests less than the minimum wage and failed to pay overtime, the lawsuit says.
The Labor Department submitted with the lawsuit a list of 114 names of former worker/guests. All but one worked at the hostel for room and board, said Leanne Amaden, Department of Labor spokeswoman.
The lawsuit also alleges that the company and Reiter fired one employee for filing a complaint about wages with the secretary of labor.
Reiter did not return messages asking for comment.
