Hawaii Kai brush fire closes highway
Honolulu firefighters extinguished a 1- to 2-acre brush fire near the Hawaii Kai Golf Course that injured a homeless man and temporarily forced the closure of busy Kalanianaole Highway.
The fire broke out Sunday on the makai side of Kalanianaole Highway, and police closed the highway to allow firefighters to get water from the hydrant on the mauka side near the golf course, fire Capt. Gary Lum said.
"We can’t have cars driving over the hose," Lum said.
A homeless man who lives in the area suffered a burn but declined treatment at the scene, Lum said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Lum said.
It was reported around 10:40 a.m. and extinguished around 12:25 p.m., Lum said.
Missing kayaker picked up off Kaena Point
A Coast Guard helicopter crew found a missing kayaker approximately five to six miles off Kaena Point on Sunday evening.
Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the helicopter crew spotted the man and his kayak at about 6:20 p.m., and a Coast Guard cutter picked him up.
Lum said a caller reported the man was diving about a half-mile offshore across from the white radar domes at the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station. Lum said the kayaker, who was on a one-man Scupper Pro, was apparently blown farther out to sea and couldn’t get back to shore.
Fire rescue personnel also searched for the missing man.
The Fire Department dispatched a helicopter, watercraft and engines at about 4:20 p.m., Lum said.
The man had been missing for about 21⁄2 hours before the report was made, Lum said. He did not know the age of the kayaker or where he was from.

The report was made at about 2:15 p.m.
The hiker was spotted by helicopter rescue personnel. Two fire rescue workers were inserted and brought the man down by helicopter uninjured at about 3:30 p.m., fire Capt. Gary Lum said.
Earlier Sunday, fire rescue personnel carried out a woman about 40 years old who fainted while hiking Manoa Falls Trail. Lum said the woman hiked about two-thirds of the trail in when she felt dizzy and fainted at about 1:56 p.m.
Two rescue crews hiked up and carried her out. The first crew got to her at about 2:20 p.m. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
