Subpoenas galore in HSTA complaint
If serving subpoenas in real life is indeed how it’s done as depicted in TV crime dramas, local subpoena servers must have enjoyed a boom in business lately.
At least, that’d be the case based on the nearly 90 — count ’em, 90 — subpoenas handed out by the Hawaii State Teachers Association in its epic battle against the governor and state before the Hawaii Labor Relations Board.
The HSTA argues in its "prohibited practice" complaint that the state violated members’ rights and the law when it unilaterally imposed a "last, best and final" contract offer July 1.
Included on the HSTA’s witness list: Gov. Neil Abercrombie, schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi, some labor law experts, principals and teachers.
On the other side, the state’s subpoena list totals nearly 40 people, including HSTA President Wil Okabe and other leaders of the union.
Did you get your subpoena yet? Try not to feel slighted if you didn’t.
UH Warriors might go west
Word is out that the University of Hawaii is considering playing a regular-season football game in Osaka, Japan.
Jim Donovan, UH athletic director, met recently with Osaka Dome executives to discuss the game, which could be held as soon as 2014.
For UH, it would be just a little longer than the typical road trip, about 4,100 miles.
Not so for UH’s opponent, whoever it might be.
For UH, that’s practically a home-field advantage.
