Mohika released from hospital
Damien football player Alan Mohika was released from the hospital on Wednesday.
Mohika, a quarterback and defensive back, suffered a concussion and lost consciousness during a game at Moanalua on Friday and had been in the hospital ever since. The swelling and bleeding on his brain were monitored and treated and he was out of intensive care by Sunday morning.
Hurley headlines PacWest team
Hawaii-Hilo senior middle Hillary Hurley was named the preseason player of the year and Hawaii Pacific senior Kyra Pelayo the libero of the year as the Pacific West Conference announced its preseason all-conference volleyball team Wednesday.
Hurley was the player of the year last season and Pelayo the libero of the year. Joining the two on the preseason all-conference team are Brigham Young-Hawaii senior hitter Losaline Faka‘osi and junior hitter Laurent Hagemeyer, HPU senior hitter Natasha Bell and Academy of Art senior middle Amy Bush.
BYU-Hawaii was tabbed as the coaches’ pick to win the conference, receiving six of the 10 first-place votes. New member Cal Baptist was picked second, followed by UH-Hilo, HPU and Dixie State. Rounding out the poll were Grand Canyon, Academy of Art, Notre Dame de Namur, Chaminade and Dominican.
Reporter Luis honored by PacWest
The Pacific West Conference named Star-Advertiser sports writer Cindy Luis as its Media Award winner for her coverage of the NCAA Division II conference.
"Cindy Luis is an excellent writer and reporter who has provided outstanding coverage of the PacWest over the last few years," Bob Hogue, commissioner of the PacWest, said. "This honor is well deserved and I want to personally thank Cindy for her commitment to college athletics and the PacWest."
Luis worked for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin since 1981 and for the Star-Advertiser since the papers merged last year.
Also Wednesday, the PacWest selected Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Scott Lowe as its Sports Information Director of the Year. Lowe has been the Seasiders’ SID since 1997, became an assistant athletic director in 2005 and was the head softball coach last season.
U.S. beats Italy in volleyball
Team USA rallied to beat Italy today in Pool B play of the FIVB World Grand Prix final round in Macau.
Former Rainbow Wahine middle Heather Bown had two kills, two blocks and an ace, and Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg added 42 assists, a block and an ace in the 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory. The U.S. (2-0) finishes pool play Friday against Brazil.
PacWest tabs scholar-athletes of year
Hawaii’s Pacific West Conference schools dominated the scholar-athlete selections for 2010-11 with seven players chosen out of the 11 sports sponsored by the conference.
Brigham Young-Hawaii had five of the top athletes: Marques Whippy, men’s basketball; Thomas Rivers Puzey, men’s cross country; Lacey Johnson Krout, women’s cross country; Emily Mearns, women’s soccer, and Elwen Li Boud, women’s tennis.
Hawaii Pacific’s Rylan Morihara was chosen in baseball and Chaminade’s Tanya Alvino in volleyball.

BYUH’s Boud up for NCAA honor
Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Elwen Li Boud is among 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award for Division II.
Boud, who graduated last spring with a degree in exercise and sport science, was a four-time first-team All-American in both singles and doubles tennis. She was the ITA NCAA II Senior Player of the Year for 2011.
The national winner will be chosen by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and will be announced in an Oct. 16 ceremony in Indianapolis.
Mid-Pacific’s Terao to American
Mid-Pacific graduate David Terao has signed to wrestle for American University in Washington, D.C.
Terao was named an All-American in freestyle at last month’s ASICS/Vaughan National Championships. He was a four-time state champion in judo and a two-time state champion in wrestling while competing for Pac-Five.
