New York diver still missing
Firefighters planned to search a fourth day for a missing scuba diver from New York City who disappeared Monday while exploring an underwater wreck about a half-mile off Waialae-Kahala.
Matthew Curley, 22, was part of a group of 11 that went on an Island Divers excursion. When the group surfaced about 9 a.m., he was missing.
The Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department searched most of Monday and Tuesday before the Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday night. Island Divers assisted in the search and found a fin Tuesday that belonged to the company in the water about a mile from the dive site.
The fin matched the type and size Curley was wearing, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
No signs of Curley were found Wednesday, Seelig said. The fire department searched by boat and helicopter about three miles from shore, and firefighters, who scoured the coastline by foot between Koko Head and Diamond Head on Tuesday, extended their search to the mouth of Honolulu Harbor. Divers with the department searched underwater about two miles along the coast.
Firefighters ended their search at dark Wednesday and planned to return at sunrise today.
Snorkeler in critical condition
A 54-year-old woman visiting from Saudi Arabia was taken in extremely critical condition to the hospital after being found floating face-down at Hanauma Bay shortly before noon Wednesday, a city Ocean Safety official said.
The woman had been snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, said Jim Howe, operations chief of the city Ocean Safety Division, when other snorkelers noticed her. “They bumped into her in the water,” he said. The snorkelers brought her to shore and alerted lifeguards.
Lifeguards performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived. She was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition, an EMS supervisor said.
