The Navy has awarded a $52.4 million contract for construction at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, including a new multistory bachelor enlisted quarters, renovation of other quarters, a new command facility, a multilevel parking structure and demolition of five command post buildings.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii said Wednesday it awarded the contract to Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. Inc.
The project is expected to be completed in August 2014.
The project will renovate bachelor quarters buildings 5070 and 5071. Workers will also demolish command post buildings 4010, 4017, 4019, 4020 and 6705, clearing land for the new facilities, the Navy said.
"This project is another important step forward for Marine Corps Base Hawaii to provide a substantial amount of new housing for our personnel," said Lee Yamamoto, deputy director of the facilities department at the base.
Features such as photovoltaic systems, high-efficiency windows and water-conserving plumbing fixtures are planned to be used.
The new multistory bachelor enlisted quarters will have 107 rooms. A multistory consolidated Command Operations Facility will replace the five command post buildings to be demolished.
The project will also make upgrades to the two existing bachelor quarters including seismic structural improvements and central air conditioning.
