Aussies sweep Waikiki

George O’Brien was chased to the finish line by second-place finisher Codie Grimsey on Monday in a close finish at the Waikiki Roughwater Swim.

Australians dominated the Waikiki Roughwater Swim on Monday.

George O’Brien of Brisbane was the winner, finishing the 2.4 miles in 43 minutes and 40 seconds. He was just ahead of Codie Grimsey, who was credited with the same time. A third Australian, Trent Grimsey, was next in 43:44.

The Grimseys are brothers from Cashmere, Australia.

Australians also took the top three spots in the women’s race. Luane Rowe (49:06), Shelley Clark (49:50) and Zoe Elkerton (51:47) finished in that order.

Rowe, who placed 18th overall, won for the fourth consecutive time.

‘Iolani senior Kacy Johnson was the first local finisher, completing the course in 45:49 for eighth place overall.

A total of 864 swimmers finished the 42nd annual race, which started at San Souci Beach and finished at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
