Patacchia places third in heat, advances
Hawaii surfer Fred Patacchia placed third in his three-man, first-round heat Tuesday in the Quiksilver Pro New York in Long Beach, N.Y.
Despite the loss to Taj Burrow and Patrick Gudauskas, Patacchia advanced to the second round in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest.
Inman, Rabacal win tandem world title
Hawaii’s Chuck Inman and Tiffany Rabacal won the NKF Surf Festival tandem surfing final on Monday in Cocoa Beach, Fla., to clinch the International Tandem Surfing Association’s World Tour championship.
Inman and Rabacal also won the world title in 2008.
On Monday, they edged three other teams in the event final, including two teams from Hawaii — Paul Chambers and Krystl Apeles, and Christian Bartsch and Aimee Murcia.
"Wow, I can’t believe we won," Inman said in a news release. "… Each year teams get more and more competitive. We had to continue to step up our own level of training to gain an edge on the competition."
Utah Valley sweeps BYUH
Utah Valley, a Division I school, defeated Division II Brigham Young-Hawaii 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 in women’s volleyball Tuesday night in Orem, Utah.
Erica Nish had 13 kills to lead the Wolverines (6-2).
Stella Chen led the Seasiders (3-1) with 10 kills and Tajana Santiago added 12 digs.
