The following community events are planned in conjunction with the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks:
» A paddle-out in honor of those who died is being coordinated for Sunday by AccesSurf, which is partnering with the Sierra Club, City and County of Honolulu, Hale Koa Hotel, Fort DeRussy, Military Wounded Warriors and community members. The event, to which the public is invited to participate, will take place at Fort DeRussy beach in Waikiki fronting the Hale Koa Hotel. The public is encouraged to bring flowers and lei. Participants will gather at 9:30 a.m., with the paddle-out at 9:50 a.m. An ocean blessing will occur at 10:03 a.m., the time the last plane went down in Pennsylvania 10 years ago. AccesSurf is a nonprofit organization that advocates for beach and ocean access for the disabled.
» A remembrance ceremony at Fort Shafter’s Palm Circle is planned for Friday at 4:30 p.m. Soldiers, civilian employees and families will attend, and Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski will deliver a speech.
» The Oahu Choral Society will present Mozart’s "Requiem" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Beretania and Queen Emma streets. Performers include Honolulu Symphony Chorus, Kona Music Society, musicians from the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Georgine Stark, Anna Mooy, Guy Merola, Nicholas Walters and conductor Esther S. Yoo. A year after the terrorist attacks, Mozart’s "Requiem" was performed in more than 24 countries. Tickets are $20, $15 for military and students, and can be purchased at www.oahuchoral.org, by phone at 735-4311, or at the door.
» A remembrance ceremony, 11 a.m. Sunday, centerstage at Ala Moana Center, will feature the Pacific Fleet Band, Kings Guard and Halau Na Mamo O Kaala.
