The Waianae community is rallying to support Leihoku Elementary School by offering donations or tips after the largest theft at a Hawaii public school campus in years, Principal Randall Miura said.

"I really appreciate the outpouring of support from the community," Miura said. "We had many calls from community members just offering assistance in terms of donations or even providing tips. It’s really been kind of heartwarming to see people coming forward to offer assistance for the kids."

Police said Tuesday afternoon they had recovered 30 of the 62 laptop computers that burglars took over the weekend.

The theft happened Sunday night or Monday morning, resulting in a loss of about $90,000 worth of computers and damage to the carts carrying the equipment. Thieves broke into the school by removing window louvers and cutting screens and took 60 laptops for students, two laptops belonging to teachers and miscellaneous supplies. Some of the laptops were less than a year old. The 910-student school has about 60 laptops left.

Details were not released on how the computers were recovered.

Some of the stolen laptops might have been sold to people who did not know they were stolen, and detectives are asking folks who think they may have bought a laptop belonging to the school to bring it to the Wai­anae or Kapolei police stations for verification, police said. No arrests were made by Tuesday afternoon.

Miura praised the efforts of the Police Department for responding quickly and working hard on the case.

School staff met Tuesday to discuss security measures, but Miura would not go into details of security procedures.

He said the students were concerned about the teachers whose rooms were broken into and who had their laptops and supplies taken.

"This is their second home or their home away from home," he said. "It’s kind of personal for everybody when something like this happens."

Miura, school principal for 18 years, said no donations had come in yet but found the flood of concerned calls encouraging.

"The community, their response, makes me really proud to be a part of the Waianae community," he said.
