Officer hurt in crash gets out of hospital
A police officer injured critically during a crash that killed another officer last week was released from the Queen’s Medical Center Thursday afternoon, the Police Department said.
Officials said Herman "Sam" Scanlan, a 14-year veteran, is expected to recover fully from his injuries and return to work, but no timetable was given.
Scanlan, 55, had been in the hospital since the Sept. 13 incident. Scanlan stopped a tan Jeep Cherokee with an expired vehicle registration decal just before Farrington Highway’s Ko Olina offramp at 10:30 p.m. when a Toyota pickup truck collided with police cars, causing one to hit Scanlan on the median, police said.
Police officer Eric Fontes was killed in the accident. Three other officers were not injured, police said.
The 20-year-old Waianae man who drove the truck was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent injury. He was released pending investigation.
