Members of the public may leave online condolences at www.borthwickoahu.com for police officer Eric Charles Fontes, who was killed Sept. 13 in a traffic incident near Honokai Hale in Leeward Oahu.
A service for Fontes will be held Friday at Borthwick Mortuary’s Maunakea Chapel, at Vineyard Boulevard and Maunakea Street. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a service at 5:30 p.m. The family requests aloha attire and no flowers.
There will be also a service on Oct. 8 on Fontes’ home island of Molokai, at Ka Hale La’a o Ierusalema Hou Church. Visitation and service times will be announced later. Check www.borthwickoahu.com for updates on arrangements.
Fontes is survived by wife Li Ann; son Layne Hironaka; daughter Corie Li "Charlie" Stephens; mother Lottie Haia Burrows; stepfather Leslie Burrows; stepmother Ann Fontes; brothers Aaron and Derek Fontes, Leslie Jr. and Leonard Burrows, and Donald Rangasan; sister Leah Burrows-Nuuanu; and three grandchildren.
Fontes, 45, of Kapolei was on the median of Farrington Highway near the Ko Olina offramp with other officers at about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 13 when a pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old Waianae man hit him from behind. Fontes died at Pali Momi Medical Center from his injuries. Officer Herman "Sam" Scanlan was injured; he was released from the Queen’s Medical Center Thursday afternoon.
The Hawaii Law Enforcement Federal Credit Union has set up a fund to assist the families of the two police officers. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to any of the credit union branches.
Checks should be made out to the Hawaii Law Enforcement Credit Union with "Officers Relief Fund" noted in the memo line.
The main office is at 1537 Young St., and branch offices are in Kapolei at 889 Kamokila Blvd. and the Pearl City police station at 1100 Waimano Home Road. Donations are not being accepted at the main police station. Call 973-4311.
