Maui blazes burn in mountains, cane field
Maui firefighters battled a brush fire Monday morning in the mountains above Kapalua Airport on Maui, while another fire on sugar cane land in Puunene overnight Sunday was extinguished.
Firefighters used a helicopter to extinguish Monday’s blaze in a remote area of West Maui where there is no road access.
Firefighters responded to the alarm just after 1 a.m. Monday. They estimated that about five to 10 acres burned.
In the other fire, more than 100 acres of a cane field burned in Puunene.
Firefighters responded to the alarm just after 10 p.m. Sunday. However, Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Co. officials said they would handle the blaze, Maui fire officials said. The fire was extinguished just after 1 a.m. Monday.
2 women displaced by home fire in Kailua
Fire destroyed at least half of a wooden Kailua home Monday morning, but no one was injured.
Up to 35 firefighters responded to the 11:09 alarm at 528 Kipuka Place near the Kailua Shopping Center. The fire was extinguished 30 minutes later.
No one was home at the time of the fire, although two women live in the house, Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said. Damage to the building was estimated at $325,000 and another $25,000 to its contents.
The Red Cross also was called in to help the two women who were displaced by the fire.
Robbers nab ATM at Kauai shopping mall
Kauai police were investigating the theft of an automated teller machine at the Anchor Cove Shopping Center early Monday morning.
Police were notified of the missing machine at 6:50 a.m. by a Loomis employee. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime after midnight Sunday.
