Event marks 70 years for 25th Infantry
The 25th Infantry Division is celebrating its 70th anniversary this week.
On Friday the unit plans to dedicate a field at Schofield Barracks in honor of former division commander Gen. Fred Weyand, who died last year at age 93.
Weyand was the last commander of U.S. military operations in Vietnam. He also served as Army chief of staff.
The public is being invited to see military equipment on display at Weyand Field starting at noon Friday.
On Oct. 2 the division plans to hold a ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to commemorate fallen members.
The Punchbowl cemetery memorial will include a ceremonial salute battery.

Lawsuit withdrawn after Kauai utility safeguards birds
Conservation groups dropped a federal lawsuit they filed against Kauai’s electric utility Monday after deciding the utility is taking important steps to protect threatened seabirds.
The groups sued Kauai Island Utility Cooperative more than a year go. They alleged the utility violated the Endangered Species Act by not taking steps to protect Hawaiian petrels and Newell’s shearwaters, which tend to hit power lines.
Hui Hoomalu i ka Aina, the Conservation Council for Hawaii, the Center for Biological Diversity and the American Bird Conservancy filed the suit. Earthjustice is representing them.
Police training on Umi Street will involve guns
The Kauai Police Department will be conducting realistic-looking training through Thursday at the former 5th Circuit Court Building on Umi Street in Lihue, the county said in a news release.
The public might see officers in the vicinity of the building with weapons drawn and might hear gunfire, but the rounds will be blank. The exercise began Monday and will run between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Lava still spills but looks to have halted its advance
Lava continues to flow from Puu Oo crater, but it is contained to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and state land managed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Geologist Janet Babb said Monday the flows are still active but that it doesn’t look like there will be any more advancement.
