Brandon Yabes of Kapolei wasn’t the first person to jump from the Nuuanu Reservoir, but the Board of Water Supply hopes he will be the last.
The 22-year-old Hawaii Pacific University student died Sunday after jumping from the tower of Nuuanu Reservoir No. 4, which is off-limits to the public. It was the first such fatal accident at the site, according to the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.
Yabes’ Facebook profile began to fill with pictures and tributes from his friends Monday.
"Many good memories with you," posted one friend. "You will always be in our hearts and never forgotten."
At about 11 a.m. Sunday, Honolulu firefighters were called to the reservoir to search for a missing man. Yabes was part of a group of people who illegally entered the property, which is owned and managed by the Board of Water Supply.
Yabes reportedly jumped from the tower from a height of more than 50 feet and never surfaced. Fire Department divers retrieved his body from about 25 feet of water.
"His friends said he landed wrong," a relative wrote on his Facebook page to his friends.
Yabes died by drowning, according to the city Medical Examiner’s Office.
"Our hearts go out to the family involved in this accident," Water Board spokesman Kurt Tsue said. "This is definitely something we wish didn’t happen."
A quick search for "Nuuanu Reservoir" brings up several amateur videos of people jumping into the water from the tower. The water at the reservoir is typically 25 to 30 feet, Tsue said. The reservoir, at one time open to the public for fishing, is not used for potable water.
Tsue said there are fencing and "no trespassing" signs installed at the perimeter of the site. The agency also had surveillance equipment installed.
"We also work closely with the Honolulu Police Department to help us patrol the area," Tsue said. "In the incidents where people have been caught trespassing, they have been prosecuted."
