Cyr continues to lead Gateway golf
Makawao’s Sam Cyr followed up a first-round 65 with a 69 Thursday to remain in first at the Gateway Tour Championship, being played at The Rim Club in Payson, Ariz.
At 8-under-par 134, Cyr is two shots ahead of three golfers halfway through the $100,000 event.
Cyr, a two-time NAIA national champion at Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), currently sits at 20th on the money list.
Young Hawaii team finishes eighth
Hawaii, the youngest squad in the ninth U.S. Golf Association Women’s State Team Championship, finished eighth Thursday at The Landings Club in Savannah, Ga.
Georgia won the three-day tournament, which featured 51 teams, with a score of 448. Hawaii shot 466.
Format was three-person teams with the two best scores counting each day. Waiakea junior Ciera Min, 15, closed with a 78 and ‘Iolani freshman Hana Furuichi, 14, shot 82. Allisen Corpuz, 13, Hawaii’s third player, had to withdraw in the final round to catch a flight to the Ping Invitational, which starts tomorrow in Stillwater, Okla.
BYU-Hawaii sweeps Cal Baptist
Stella Chen and Lauren Hagemeyer both had 13 kills as Brigham Young-Hawaii swept Cal Baptist 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Riverside, Calif. BYU-Hawaii improved to 10-3 and 7-1, while Cal Baptist fell to 8-8 and 1-4.
