Cyr ties for fifth in Gateway championship
Maui’s Sam Cyr, who led the Gateway Tour Championship after two rounds, finished in a tie for fifth Saturday at The Rim Club in Payson, Ariz.
Cyr opened with rounds of 65-69, but faded to 74-73 the last two days to finish at 3-under-par 281. Scott Harrington fired a final-round 67 to win by six shots. His four-day total was 268.
Cyr, a two-time NAIA national champion when he was at Point Loma Nazarene, won $3,883, giving him just under $25,000 in his 13 Gateway starts this year. This was his seventh top 10. He is 19th on the money list.
The King Kekaulike graduate will play in the PGA Tour’s First Qualifying Stage, Oct. 26-29, at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
BYUH sweeps HPU in volleyball
Stella Chen had 17 kills and Aika Becker added 11 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Hawaii Pacific in women’s volleyball Saturday in Laie.
Ariel Hsu chipped in with nine kills and hit .474 for the Seasiders (11-3, 8-1 Pacific West Conference).
Sanoe Recca had seven kills for the Sea Warriors (10-6, 5-2).
Alaska Fairbanks sweeps Hilo event
Alaska Fairbanks won the men’s and women’s team titles in the Hilo Invitational cross country meet on Saturday at Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf and Country Club.
The Nanooks were led in the women’s race by Theresia Schnurr, Sieber Raphaela and Crystal Pitney, who finished third, fourth and fifth.
The Alaska Fairbanks men placed five runners in the top 15, led by Tyler Kornfield in fifth place.
Spencer Deavila of Brigham Young-Hawaii won the men’s race in 20 minutes, 51 seconds, followed by teammates Justin Royer (21:10) and Daniel Bridge (21:12).
BYUH’s Lacey Lynn Krout (18:21) and Katherine Buxton (18:24) finished first and second in the women’s race.
BYUH beats Chaminade in soccer
Natalie Drewery, Kim Micheletti, and Rylei North scored goals to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 3-1 win over Chaminade in women’s soccer Saturday in Honolulu.
Savannah Clements scored the Silverswords’ only goal.

HPU, UHH play to soccer draw
Lindsey Poulsen scored in the 65th minute to give Hawaii-Hilo a 2-2 women’s soccer tie on Saturday at Amauulu Field in Hilo.
Kristine Pasek also scored for the Vulcans. Yasmina Taketa and Shelby Moriguchi scored for the Sea Warriors.
Hawaii-Hilo third at St. Martin’s Invitational
Dayna Bersamin shot a 1-over 74 and finished in a tie for fourth place to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a third-place finish in the St. Martin’s Invitational on Saturday at the Olympia Golf and Country Club in Washington.
Bersamin had a two-round total of 158. The Vulcans finished at 646, 15 strokes behind first-place Western Washington.
» Hawaii Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii in a men’s golf dual match Friday at the Ewa Beach Golf Club, 300-302.
James Fawssett led HPU with a 73, while the Seasiders’ Alex Stulce had the low round with a 72. Harry Chang and Andy Rodby each shot a 75 for the Sea Warriors.
The Sea Warriors host BYUH on Friday at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
