Parties rush to occupy ‘Occupy’ domain names
Briefly, it seems, some folks in the local spinoff of New York’s Occupy Wall Street movement wanted to jettison the "occupation" terminology for Hawaii, that being a concept unpopular with some indigenous people here. In the end, the budding group settled on Occupy Honolulu (though both that name and Occupy Oahu have Facebook pages up now).
A parent entity called OccupyTheUSA.org has bought the OccupyHonolulu.org domain — although a Web site was still under construction yesterday. The current HQ is on Facebook and Twitter (#OccupyHonolulu is the hashtag there).
Now capitalism has planted its flag, even in this largely anti-corporatist territory. The domains OccupyHonolulu.com and OccupyHawaii.com were bought up by an Internet company called Fabulous.com, in the apparent hopes of a lucrative future sale to the group.
Seems unlikely the antiprofiteers would buy that, right?
Gov. Abercrombie heads west ahead of APEC
Back in the islands for less than two weeks from Paris, where he and wife Nancie Caraway celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, Gov. Neil Abercrombie is on a 13-day trip to Asia for more hefty purposes.
The 13-day trip, which began Sunday, will take Abercrombie and special assistant Tim McBroom to Tokyo, Okinawa and Beijing in an attempt to reach out to Asian markets and strengthen economic relations leading up to the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November. The governor says he’s confident no major problems will occur with APEC. It’s hoped the governor’s trip will help ensure smooth sailing.
