A man called Honolulu police to report hearing approximately six gunshots at the time a woman was shot and killed near a Kapiolani Boulevard intersection at the start of a highway shooting spree June 3, according to a 911 tape released Thursday by the city.
The man said he heard about six shots that didn’t sound like they came from a rifle.
He also said in his 12:43 a.m. call that he saw a white minivan without its lights on the side of Kapiolani Boulevard.
The victim, Tammy Nguyen, was idling her van at a red light at a Kapiolani Boulevard intersection when she was shot multiple times, according to police.

The city released the tapes of four other calls Oct. 7.
