>> The Play: Cullen Newsome forces KR Scott Harding to fumble and Chandler Jones picks up the ball at the Hawaii 23 and scores his second touchdown of the game.
>> Impact: Despite five turnovers and numerous other first-half mistakes, Hawaii is still within two touchdowns of the lead.
>> Hawaii coach Greg McMackin: “Quite honestly, being down 20-7 after the first half … I told them it should’ve been 40-7.”
2. Comeback
>> Situation: San Jose State 20, Hawaii 14, 1:51 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 4 at Hawaii 24
>> The Play: Moniz runs down the right sideline 74 yards to the San Jose State 2.
>> Impact: Joey Iosefa scores on a 2-yard run on the next play, and the extra point gives Hawaii a 21-20 lead. The drive was set up by John Hardy-Tuliau’s interception, one of six San Jose State turnovers in the second half.
>> Moniz: “In the second half we came out with a fire, and the defense led the way.”
3. Blocked I
>> Situation: Hawaii 27, San Jose State 20, 11:46 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, attempting point-after-touchdown at San Jose State 3
>> The Play: Travis Johnson penetrates and blocks PK Kenton Chun’s extra-point kick. Duke Ihenacho picks up the ball and returns it the length of the field for two points for San Jose State.
>> Impact: A successful kick after Joey Iosefa’s 32-yard touchdown run would have given Hawaii an 8-point lead. Instead, San Jose State trails by just 5 and regains the momentum.
>> Ihenacho: “I don’t know how I did it. I wasn’t thinking. I was just running. I was lucky.”
4. Blocked II
>> Situation: Hawaii 27, San Jose State 22, 3:22 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball fourth and 16 at San Jose State 25
>> The Play: Anderson breaks through again and this time blocks PK Tyler Hadden’s 42-yard field-goal attempt. Keith Smith recovers for San Jose State at the 34.
>> Impact: Another kick that would put Hawaii in control of the game is blocked.
>> Hawaii holder Shane Austin: “We’ve been getting blocked all year. I don’t know what’s going on. The ball was there. The hold was there. The kick was there. We had a good get-off time. And then it was blocked. I don’t know what to say.”
5. The Cycle
>> Situation: Hawaii 27, San Jose State 22, :36 remaining, fourth quarter, San Jose State ball, second and 10 at Hawaii 37
>> The Play: QB Matt Faulkner finds Jones open across the middle. Jones catches the pass and scores his third touchdown of the game.
>> Impact: This play gives San Jose State the score that wins the game. Hawaii has all three timeouts available, but the clock runs down to zero after an unsuccessful Hail Mary from the Hawaii 39. Jones scores all three San Jose State touchdowns: one rushing, one on a fumble return and one receiving.
>> Jones: “It was kind of like the cycle.”
