Hawaii island police were investigating a shooting and a violent home invasion in two separate incidents Saturday in Puna.
Shortly after midnight, police responded to a report of a woman screaming for help in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
Officers found the woman, 69, with severe head injuries and determined a man forced his way into her home and assaulted her. The woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police scoured the area and found an 18-year-old Keaau man hiding in a nearby house about 1:25 a.m. He was arrested for investigation of first-degree burglary and second-degree attempted murder. The weapon believed to have been used in the assault was also recovered.
About 2:40 a.m., a 36-year-old Keaau man was grazed by a bullet in the head while driving on Route 130 in the Ainaloa subdivision, police said.
Just before the shooting, the man got into a confrontation on the highway with three men in a teal sedan. While the man was driving, one of the three men shot at him in the Ainaloa subdivision. The sedan, similar to a Ford Escort or a Nissan Sentra, drove off.
The man was treated for a head injury at the Hilo Medical Center and released.
Detectives opened a second-degree attempted murder case, but the suspects remain at large.
