Hawaii receiver Allen Sampson said he will have surgery in two weeks to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
Sampson, who started four games at left wideout, will miss the rest of the football season.
"The worst part is I can’t finish for my seniors," said Sampson, a sophomore from Tampa, Fla. "I wanted to help them finish off their careers. Kani (Tuipulotu), Royce (Pollard), A.B. (Aaron Brown), Mo (Bryant Moniz) — I’m close with all of the seniors. When I told Tank (Hopkins) about (the surgery), he was hurt about it as much as I was."
Sampson said he suffered the noncontact injury while making a cut on an end-around run in the first half of a 45-34 victory over New Mexico State.
"I felt it, then I went down," Sampson said.
An MRI showed the tear.
"I hurt my ankle before, but not my knee," Sampson said.
Because he played in more than three games and the injury occurred after the sixth game, Sampson is not eligible to apply for a medical hardship for this season. But he did not redshirt as a freshman in 2010, still leaving him with three years to play two seasons.
Trevor Davis and Darius Bright both practiced at left wideout Tuesday.
Chun’s knee ailing
Kenton Chun, the Warriors’ top point-after kicker, will practice today to determine whether his ailing left knee will allow him to play in Saturday’s road game against Idaho.
The Warriors depart this afternoon.
"I think it’s better," Chun said. "I’ve been doing rehab. We’ll see how it goes."
Chun suffered the injury to his nonkicking leg during a practice last week. Against New Mexico State on Saturday, Chun converted all three of his PAT attempts.
"On the last kick I had, (the left knee) actually buckled, so the ball went really low," Chun said. "As long as it holds up, I feel good about it."
Chun and Tyler Hadden, who handles kickoffs, were on the travel roster to San Jose two weeks ago. The Warriors are limited to a travel roster of 64 players.
Linebackers held out
Starting linebackers Corey Paredes and Brown did not practice Tuesday because of ailments. Both are expected to play against Idaho.
George Daily-Lyles and Darryl McBride filled their spots on the first-team defense.
Right wideout Pollard, who did not practice last week because of a tight right hamstring, worked out Tuesday. He said his hamstring is no longer a problem.
