The University of Hawaii’s NCAA Graduation Success Rate scores climbed for the fourth period in a row but still lagged behind the national average, according to statistics released by the NCAA.
Overall, UH athletes posted a 72 percent graduation rate for the entering classes of 2001-04, up from 70 percent in the previous period and a rise from 67 percent four years ago. The national average for the 2001-04 classes was 80 percent.
The GSR is a yardstick of academic progress and companion to Academic Performance Rate standings that are announced in the spring. UH scored higher in the APR, which involves rolling averages.
"Our numbers are on a positive trend, which is a good sign," athletic director Jim Donovan said.
Three UH teams — men’s swimming, women’s tennis and women’s basketball — posted GSRs of 100, while softball (94) and women’s volleyball (92) were in the 90s.
Overall, UH tied for fourth among eight current Western Athletic Conference members and is seventh among WAC football members (51). The average among Football Bowl Subdivision programs is 67 percent.
