Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz is on the clock.
“Another six weeks left,” said Moniz, a senior. “Time’s a wastin’.”
While Moniz aspires to a career in professional football, he realizes there are no guarantees beyond December.
“It could be all done,” he said. “I might be working 9 to 5, with my bright T-shirt on. You never know. That’s how life goes.”
He said his only regret is he wishes the Warriors were better than 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
“But our season isn’t over,” said Moniz, whose Warriors departed Wednesday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s road game against Idaho. “We can still end up with the same type of record as last season (10-3 during the 2010 regular season). We can still do a lot of great things. There are a lot of games left. I’m looking forward to them.”
Moniz is a semester away from earning a bachelor’s degree. He said he probably will take off from school during the spring semester to train for UH’s Pro Day in March.
If a pro opportunity does not materialize, he will return to school to earn his degree.
“I’ll play flag football,” he said, smiling. “All I know is I’ll compete in something, that’s for sure. It’s hard to believe it’s going to end some day, but it has to.”
Changes in store for Davis
It has been a season of adjustments for freshman Trevor Davis, who is expected to start at left wideout against Idaho.
Davis was activated the past weekend — ending his chance to redshirt this season — as insurance against right wideout Royce Pollard’s tight right hamstring. Pollard started against New Mexico State, and when left wideout Allen Sampson suffered a season-ending knee injury, Davis moved to that side.
Davis, who has only practiced at right wideout, had to learn the routes, techniques and stances of playing on the left side.
This season, he also began wearing athletic gloves.
“I never wore gloves before,” Davis said. “My dad didn’t let me. He didn’t believe in gloves.”
That all changed during UH’s passing drills.
“The balls are thrown a lot faster,” Davis said. “It kind of hurt my hands. I started wearing gloves, and noticed it felt a lot better. It helps a lot.”
Next year, he might try another experiment.
“I’ve never worn a (helmet) visor before, either,” he said.
Chun healthy, traveling
With time expiring, Kenton Chun converted some timely kicks Wednesday.
Chun did not practice Tuesday because of tendinitis in his left (nonkicking) knee. The coaches wanted to wait until after Wednesday’s kicking drills to decide whether Chun would be added to the 64-player travel roster.
Chun kicked without pain to earn a travel berth.
“He made all of his PATs,” UH head coach Greg McMackin said.
McMackin said Chun will handle point-after kicks and field-goal tries up to 40 yards. Tyler Hadden will be used for kickoffs and long-distance attempts.
“I packed just in case,” Chun said, smiling.
