Holding period for HIC Pro starts

The HIC Pro at Sunset Beach, precursor to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, runs today through Nov. 10, with contest organizers picking the best three days of surf.

The HIC Pro is an $85,000 4-Star ASP men’s event that will decide the 2011 ASP Hawaii regional champion. The winner advances to the first two events of the Vans Triple Crown series: the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa (Nov. 12-23), and the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach (Nov. 25-Dec. 6).

Halloween paddling event Saturday

Two-time defending Halloween costume contest winner Wendall Balai headlines Saturday’s PAA Hawaii Halloween Race from Maunalua Bay to Kaimana Beach. Divisions are OC1, V1, SS1, OC2, prone and stand-up paddleboard and OC6. Check-in and late registration is from 7:30 to 9 a.m., with the race starting at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee for the 8-mile race is $35 for adults and $25 for juniors.

Polo season ends Sunday in Waimanalo

The Honolulu Polo Club concludes its 25th season with the Colin Ogawa Cup on Sunday at the Waimanalo polo grounds. Gates open at 1 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. matches. General admission is $3, with no charge for children under 12 and military members and their families with ID.

Frowein at Karolyi gymnastics camp

Jenna Frowein, 17, of the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Club, was selected to attend a gymnastics training camp run by Bela and Marta Karolyi, who are in charge of the Olympic/National Team. The camp, which started Thursday and runs until Sunday, is being held at the USA Gymnastics Olympic National Training Center in Huntsville, Texas. The participants earned the opportunity to attend by finishing in the top 10 in the All-Around at the Junior Olympic National Competition held in May in Long Beach Calif.

7 advance to Extreme Cowboy world final

Seven Hawaii competitors have qualified for the Nov. 4-6 Extreme Cowboy Association’s World Championship in Guthrie, Okla. Team Hawaii members are Jamie Ciletti, Danielle Stump, Paris Starn, Meilan Sim, Bryn Thurston, Elena Aoki and Brooke Matson.
