UH soccer team loses to New Mexico State
The Hawaii women’s soccer team’s regular-season championship hopes were dashed after a 1-0 loss at New Mexico State on Friday.
UH (4-11-1 overall, 3-2-1 Western Athletic Conference) can still gain the second seed for next week’s WAC tournament with a win at Louisiana Tech on Sunday coupled with a loss by Fresno State. The top two seeds in the six-team tourney get a first-round bye.
NMSU (9-7-3, 2-3-2 WAC) came out fired up on its senior night, needing a win to qualify for the tournament. The Aggies got a goal by Bree Luhrsen in the 52nd minute and made it stand up through physical play.
First-year coach Michele Nagamine thought the game nearly got out of hand. Eight yellow cards were issued, including five on the Rainbow Wahine.
“This was a different kind of loss,” Nagamine said in a phone interview from Las Cruces, N.M. “We were in the game, but we just got outhustled. … They were playing for their lives, and they came out and did just that.”
UH, playing its first match in nearly two weeks, was seeking its first road victory of the season. Instead, NMSU posted a 13-5 shot margin on the Wahine, who fell to 0-8 on the mainland in 2011 and extended their school-record losing streak away from home to 11.
“I am not at all sad that we don’t have to come back here anymore,” Nagamine said.
BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team ties
After two overtime periods, the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s soccer team tied 2-2 with Dominican.
Mark Davis posted two goals for the Seasiders (8-6-2, 4-4-2 PacWest), but it wasn’t enough to get the win. Davis scored his first goal in the 13th minute off a rebound on a blocked shot. After Dominican answered with two goals in the second half, Davis scored his second to tie the game.
The Seasiders controlled the two overtime periods by outshooting Dominican 10-1 but failed to get past goalkeeper Erik Anderson. Anderson finished with 10 saved shots, with four in the second overtime.
Brigham Young-Hawaii will play again on Wednesday against Hawaii Pacific at 3 p.m.
