MOSCOW, Idaho » It wasn’t until well after he kicked the University of Hawaii’s longest field goal of the season that Tyler Hadden even knew how far it was.
Hadden’s 47-yarder in the second quarter gave UH a 13-7 lead and seemed to banish a lot of the dark clouds that hung over the Warriors kicking game as teammates rushed onto the field to congratulate him.
But when he was summoned to attempt the kick, he said he had "no idea how far it was. I was kicking into the cage (on the sideline) and just went into the game. I thought it might be about 45 yards, but I wasn’t sure."
The main thing Hadden said, "was I was just imagining it in my head going smooth and going through the uprights. I was just trying to have confidence."
Confidence that had been tested in a season in which he suffered more blocked kicks (three) than successful ones (two) in six tries.
Hadden’s longest successful field goal was 30 yards and he had been 0-for-3 from beyond 39 yards.
But Saturday, the redshirt freshman said, "I felt confident. I liked kicking in the dome. I thought it was weird at first having a football field indoors, but I liked the feel of it and thought I kicked well in practice."
After he nailed the kick, "my holder (Shane Austin) asked me how long it was. I didn’t know. I said I thought it was about 45. But it wasn’t until later I found out that it was 47. I thought that was pretty sweet. But the snap from Luke (Ingram) was perfect, the hold was smooth and the blocking was good and it felt good, just like we had been practicing."
Hadden said he kicked a 50-yarder at California High in Whittier, Calif., "but that was off a 1-inch block, which can add about 10 yards."
Said special teams coach Dick Tomey, "Tyler gave us exactly what we needed, not only with the long field goal but with his kickoffs."
