TEMARI marks 30 years of Trash & Treasure benefit
Thirty years ago TEMARI, Center for Asian & Pacific Arts, opened its doors for a Trash & Treasure fundraiser that enabled its faculty and students to clear their studios of unwanted supplies.
Craft fairs were few, so people flocked to pick up the artists’ remainders, proving the adage “One person’s trash is another’s treasure.”
Since then the annual fundraiser has turned into a full-fledged craft fair, but the artists’ remnants remain a star attraction.
The 30th-anniversary event will take place Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, in the fifth-floor Grand Ballroom. The event opens at 8 a.m. to TEMARI and JCCH members and 9 a.m. to the general public, continuing until 2 p.m.
Special attractions this year include “Lucky Gifts” donated by T&T artists, with winners every 10 minutes; “High Class Trash” including collectibles, vintage items and tchotchkes for all tastes; and other guests, including the Hawaii Potters Guild, Hui o Laulima, Pacific Asian Affairs Council and Bamboo Ridge Press.
Parking is free with a $10 purchase from the JCCH gift shop. Vendor fees and sales from the event help sustain TEMARI’s mission of perpetuating Asian and Pacific cultural traditions and nurturing contemporary art forms through educational programs, exhibitions and entrepreneurship.
