BYUH, Chang earn preseason honors

Brigham Young-Hawaii is ranked third in the NABC/Division II Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released Monday.

No. 1 Bellarmine (Ky.) and No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville are ranked ahead of the Seasiders.

BYUH lost to Bellarmine in the Division II national final a year ago.

The Seasiders’ Jet Chang was named as the preseason Division II player of the year.

Previously, the Sporting News and Basketball Times ranked BYUH fifth in the nation and tabbed Chang as a preseason All-American.

Hawaii Pacific is No. 6 and Hawaii-Hilo is No. 8.

» The BYUH women’s soccer team is No. 5 in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings.

UCLA takes Wahine Invitational

Lee Lopez shot a 2-under 70 at Kapolei Golf Course on Wednesday to take medalist honors and lead UCLA to the team victory in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational golf tournament.

Lopez finished the three-round tournament at 7-under 209, four shots ahead of teammate Stephanie Kono and San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert, who tied for second.

The Bruins won the tournament at 15-under 849, 20 shots ahead of second-place Washington (869). Stanford (883) was third.

The University of Hawaii, led by Kaili Britos (7-over 223, tied for 16th), finished in 11th place out of 12 teams. Cyd Okino of Hawaii, who plays for Washington, also tied for 16th.

HPU clinches at least a tie for title

Hawaii Pacific clinched at least a share of the Pacific West Conference men’s soccer title with a 3-0 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii on Wednesday in Laie.

Johannes Hallman, Kimo Komomua and Chance Bukoski scored for the Sea Warriors (14-4, 10-2).

The Seasiders dropped to 8-7-2 and 4-5-2.

» Liana Gualdarama and Sanoe Souza scored goals to give Hawaii Pacific a 2-1 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in women’s soccer Wednesday in Laie.

Britt Edman scored the lone goal for the Seasiders (11-3-1, 7-3-1 PacWest).

The Sea Warriors improved to 10-5-2 and 7-3-2.

Poulsen leads UHH past Dominican

Lindsey Poulsen scored two goals to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 3-2 victory over Dominican in women’s soccer in San Rafael, Calif., on Wednesday.

Kristine Pasek also scored for the Vulcans (4-8-2, 2-6-2 PacWest).

The Penguins dropped to 3-12-1 and 1-8-1.

» Dominican defeated UHH in the men’s match in San Rafael, Calif., 3-2, on two goals by Kolby Mitnick and one by Victor Robles.

Raydan Bela and Matthew Nielson scored for the Vulcans (2-11-2, 1-8-1 PacWest).

The Penguins improved to 3-12-1 and 2-7-1.
