APEC bonus will feature visits to Kapolei
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in town Monday through Sunday will restrict traffic, use of public parks, boating and harbors, pedestrians on sidewalks and crosswalks, TheBus, refuse collection, and the ballroom at the Ala Wai Golf Course.
Anything else?
Yes. Try not to get arrested. During APEC, arrestees who would normally be processed at the Honolulu Police Department’s Beretania Street headquarters will be taken to the Kapolei police station. Juveniles will go to the Kalihi station.
So unruly APEC protesters should take note: Get in trouble and it could be a long ride home.
How to make the most of a pest
Tomorrow is the annual day of reckoning for roi fish off West Maui. The fourth annual "Maui Roi Roundup" spearfishing contest aims to help thin the population of roi, also called peacock grouper, which were introduced into Hawaiian waters in the 1950s as a food source but contracted the ciguatera toxin and now are a pest.
On Oahu, there is a spearfishing contest called "Roi Reckoning," and organizer Kris Tyler says interest in the event has been growing. That’s a good thing since roi apparently have been reducing the number of native fish.
The upshot is that roi now provide sporting enjoyment to Hawaii spearfishers, and the catch from the Maui competition will be donated to farmers for use as fertilizer.
So maybe roi will help feed Hawaii residents after all.
