Rainbow Wahine defeat Chaminade 11-1
Stephanie Ricketts pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 as the University of Hawaii women’s softball team overwhelmed Chaminade 11-1 in an exhibition game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Friday. Ricketts walked one and did not allow an earned run in seven innings.
Kayla Wartner, Jessica Iwata and Sarah Robinson knocked out home runs for the Rainbow Wahine. Kelly Majam and Alexandra Aguirre picked up doubles.
Friday’s game was the first of a three-game series with a doubleheader scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Prep seniors win state Heisman award
Samuel Spengler and Michelle Fainberg beat out 48,000 applicants to be named state winners in the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award on Friday. The two seniors will advance to the national competition in Wendy’s annual quest to find the nation’s top scholar-athletes.
Spengler (basketball, water polo) of Le Jardin Academy and Fainberg (volleyball) of University Laboratory School were the top male and female out of 20 state finalists, and were distinguished for their hard work, dedication and exceptional records in athletics, academics and community leadership.
If either senior makes it to the national top 12, they will compete for the national title in New York City on Dec. 9.
BYUH’s Edman named All-Region Academic
Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s soccer player Britt Edman was named to the Capitol One Academic All-District Team for District 8 in NCAA Division II, on Friday. Edman leads the Seasiders with nine goals this season with one game left in conference play. The senior from Salt Lake City maintains a 3.79 grade-point average and majors in social work.
BYU-Hawaii’s last home game is today against Chaminade at 12:30 p.m.
HPU tops St. Martin’s in first road win
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team pulled off a victory over St. Martin’s, 60-41, in the Disney Tip-Off Classic at Anaheim Convention Center on Friday.
Taiyande Huskey led HPU with 14 points, four assists and six rebounds, followed by Skye Savini with 11 points, four assists and seven rebounds.
The Sea Warriors (1-0) claimed the program’s first win in a nonconference game on the mainland and for the first time started the season with a win, excluding the exhibition loss against the University of Hawaii.
