Man killed in pickup accident identified
Hawaii County police said the man who died Sunday from injuries sustained after he was struck by a pickup truck has been identified as Robert J. Flores, 69, of Kealakekua.
Flores was guiding a 1996 Mazda pickup as the driver reversed toward a Captain Cook house. He and the driver were repairing the truck.
Police said the driver, a 75-year-old Captain Cook man, was about five feet from the house when Flores motioned for him to stop. Instead, the driver apparently accelerated and struck Flores, pinning him between the truck and the house, police said.
Flores died at Kona Community Hospital at 5:50 p.m.
Bad weather thwarts rescue of 2 hikers
A father and son who lost their way while hiking in Central Oahu spent Monday night on a ridge because weather made their rescue too dangerous, fire officials said.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the weather was too bad for a helicopter to fly to the men, who were hiking on Waimano Trail above Pearl City.
The two men were uninjured, Seelig said.
The Fire Department will reassess conditions at first light this morning to determine what will be done, Seelig said.
Credit card found in pocket leads to arrest
Police arrested a 41-year-old Kailua man Monday morning who allegedly threatened a 38-year-old man with screwdrivers after an argument.
Police said the two had been involved in an argument when the older man allegedly brandished two screwdrivers and threatened to harm the other man.
Police arrested the man and found a credit card bearing a different person’s name in his pocket. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree theft and unauthorized possession of personal and confidential information.
