MEN’S SOCCER
No NCAA berth for Hawaii Pacific
Despite sharing the conference title and being ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll, Hawaii Pacific was not among the 32 teams selected for the NCAA D-II men’s soccer tournament that begins later this week.
The Sea Warriors (14-4, 10-2) tied Cal Baptist (13-5, 10-2) for the PacWest championship. It was HPU’s first title in the sport. Unlike women’s soccer, the PacWest did not have an automatic NCAA bid.
Last Saturday, sophomore middle Marc Hope (Hawaii Baptist) scored in the 82nd minute to help Cal Baptist earn a share of the title with a 3-1 win over Dixie State on Saturday in Riverside, Calif. The Lancers, in their first season of D-II play, were ineligible for the postseason.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
No bid for Brigham Young-Hawaii
Conference champion Grand Canyon will be the lone PacWest representative in the NCAA Division II women’s soccer tournament that begins later this week.
The Antelopes (9-5-3, 8-2-2), ranked 10th in the West Region poll, earned the conference’s automatic berth when they finished second to Cal Baptist. The Lancers are ineligible for the postseason because they are completing their first year at the Division II level.
Brigham Young-Hawaii (12-3-1, 8-3-1), ranked fifth in the West Region poll, had hoped for an at-large bid.
Edman earns all-academic honors
Brigham Young-Hawaii senior Britt Edman was named to the Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-District Team for District 8. Edman, a senior from Salt Lake City, led the Seasiders in scoring with nine goals. She has a 3.79 grade-point average in social work.
VOLLEYBALL
BYUH earns automatic bid
Brigham Young-Hawaii heads into the final week of PacWest play with one eye on Wednesday’s match at Chaminade and the other on the NCAA tourney.
The Seasiders (13-1, 16-3) clinched the conference title outright last week in a sweep of Academy of Art on Friday. It gives BYUH the PacWest’s automatic berth in the tournament, which begins in two weeks.
CROSS COUNTRY
All-region honors for Malley
» Men: Hawaii Pacific senior Dany Malley earned all-region honors after finishing in the top 25 of Saturday’s NCAA Division II West Region cross country championship in Spokane, Wash. Malley, timed in 31 minutes, 41 seconds, finished 16th out of 123 runners on the 10-kilometer course at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex. He was the top finisher among PacWest runners.
» Women: Brigham Young-Hawaii finished 12th at Saturday’s NCAA D-II West Region cross country championship in Spokane, Wash. The Seasiders finished with 312 points, with seniors Lacey Krout (22:46) and Katherine Buxton (22:49) placing 37th and 38th over the 6K course.
